You might get the old "failed to load snowflake meshes bm_snow_01.nif" error in running GOTY Morrowind Win 8.1.
The bug is the infamous Windows UAC permissions. You'll have to run Morrowind as an administrator. That's been an issue since Vista. But with Win 8.1 UAC is kind of funny, a certain level of it is needed to run some apps, so it's not ideal to turn it completely off as you could in Vista or Win 7. And you cannot permanently assign yourself Administrator at all times.
Looking around the forums, you'll find all kinds of suggested fixes, such as moving Morrowind from the Programs(86x) file to the root directory (C:), or taking the actual meshes of the snowflakes and some dozen other mesh errors and c/p them in the corresponding data files, which can take up hard drive space.
Or you can install Morrowind setup as Administrator. But I'm guessing this a fix for the Steam download version of Morrowind because I didn't get any setup dialogue, just the question if I wanted to install Morrowind. Tribunal, Bloodmoon from the retail discs of the GOTY I have.
So I have found that right clicking on the desktop shortcut to launch Morrowind as Administrator, it runs fine, or, better yet, to avoid that minor annoyance, right click on the shortcut icon, go to properties, Compatibility tab, and check "Run this program as am administrator" under Settings and hit Apply, then Okay.
