Yet another update. Yesterday it was decided to set what the doctor called a port into my father's chest as a more aggressive way to drain the fluid from my father's lungs. We were told that we will know in the next forty-eight hours if this procedure helped. So far Dad seems to be doing better. He is more alert, talkative and, for the first time in over a week, was able to eat some actual food (as opposed to only being sustained by a feeding tube). After the procedure was completed yesterday my father requested a cup of ice chips and, as soon as he was permitted to actually eat, a bit of ice cream. He was able to have his ice cream along with some apple butter while the speech therapist was working with him this morning. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) It was discovered that my father has gotten into the habit of slightly inhaling when he takes a bite of food, which of course results in food particles getting into his lungs. The speech therapist is working with him to strengthen his throat muscles and to break the habit of taking in any air when he opens his mouth to take a bite of food or a drink. So, we're keeping our fingers crossed that the procedure did the trick and Dad is finally on the road to recovery. Once again I thank you for your prayers and well wishes. We may not know each other in real life, but that doesn't stop me from thinking of each of you as dear friends.

That good news. Wanting ice cream is a good sign ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
I'm glad he's feeling better.
Our thoughts are still with you.

Agreed. Wanting ice cream or any other beloved food is a very good sign! So glad they are taking good care of him Not a fun procedure, but I can tell he already feels much better.
Still praying hard and sending positive feelings. Work kept me busy the past several hours, or I would have replied sooner! Be well, friend.

Things are not good at all now.
Twice he has stopped breathing and his heart rate went down. The doctor said his system simply can't take much more of that. He's too weak to breath on his own. His lungs aren't working and now his kidneys aren't working.
The doctor said that there is always a chance that he can still beat this, but they are running out of options and that we should prepare ourselves.
Before we left the hospital I walked to my father's bedside and looked down at him. He was asleep and had the breathing mask on. He looked worn out...So worn out.

I really really hope that I'm not jinxing anything by making this post. The last time I said that my father was doing well he went downhill.
For quite a while things continued to look bad. Dad was weak, depressed, and convinced he was going to die. Then, a week ago today, he changed overnight and started making rapid progress.
No more fluid in his lungs, his kidneys are working, he's breathing so well that he no longer needs the breathing mask, and he is now able to eat regular food. Now he's working on physical therapy. He's still physically weak after being in a hospital bed for a month, but yesterday he was able to take a few steps across his room from a chair to his bed.
The doctor has not yet given us an estimated time for him being able to come home, but I am hoping we will get to that some time this week.

Was busy with stuff all day and I'm glad I was able to check in and see how things are. I feel kind of guilty about that, but I am just so glad he's doing better and getting stronger! *HUGS*

My dad is most certainly feeling like himself again. He told house-keeping that the reason he is in the hospital is because he was in a knife fight.
The woman who was cleaning the room said, "I hope the other guy ended up in worse shape than you did."
