I was wondering this as I was playing through GHD yet again. Eight heartwights in the original game, all male? So that my character, if female, will be the first and only female heartwight? I figure two should be female, because if only /one/ is female, it looks like she's a gender-token. The question is, which two? Obviously, Ur is /very/ male. Seven left... Endus? Uthol?

I've thought of making a couple of the Heartwights female for a mod just for something different.
Which ones, I don't know. Maybe Gilvoth

The reason I haven't is because; none of them have told me that they are female. I realize that might sound strange, but that's how it goes. I never write any character as gay or change gender just to have a "token whatever". I follow what the characters tell me about themselves. And not a single one of the Heartwights has identified himself to me as anything other than male.
Edited to add: And Aeronwen likes being the only female. She won't tolerate another female Heartwight. Like a queen bee in a beehive, she would kill any rival queens.

I just listened to a podcast about how the comic book industry is being affected because of the demands of rewriting famous characters as female or other ways, how sometimes the story is lost in the favor of political narrative because it can easily become preachy. A lot of valid points there.
Though for me the Dagoths, other than Voryn, aren't yet fully defined for me in my own game. Though I would never make any of them other than male just because someone else says so and a narrative must be followed. What gender they are will have little impact in my game because I don't foresee any romance with any of them, involving Saje or other major characters, although I might include Therana being involved with Vemyn.

This discussion reminds me of a person on another forum who kept prodding me to make one of the Dagoth brothers gay. She didn't care which one. She just kept saying that "in a family with so many brothers, at one should be gay".
That may be true, but she didn't get that I couldn't just pull their names out of a hat and dub one of the Dagoths as "the gay brother". But to my knowledge she never did any writing herself so I don't think she got what I was saying about characters in my fic "telling me things" about themselves. She was the sort who felt I should pair Julan and Aeronwen simply because "they would be so cute together" and completely disregarded the fact that their personalities are not compatible.

For me it's more like... if I can't tell the difference, does it matter?
I was thinking a oneshot joke, where someone assumes there are no female heartwights besides Aeronwen, and finds out Endus drinks so heavily because she was always female on the inside, male on the outside - and even as a heartwight she can't keep her penis from growing back. Or Uthol, unless forumcanon appeared for Uthol. I had no idea about Vemyn, after all...
(It's okay, Aeronwen. Still weird that you're jealous of your hubby potentially having sisters, but I'm thinking of a joke, not reality. Or am I? )
