I absolutely loathe that phrase "self-insert." It sounds like little old church ladies talking about sex and such and how horrible and dirty it is, but privately jealous that they don't have the gumption to be so bold themselves.
No one here is the old fogey chasing the kids off the lawn. It's these lordinators who hate seeing anyone having fun with original characters- in fanfic it's usually younger kids, those who aren't so concerned with producing Shakespearean literature who make the characters they hate so much. The Lordinators are the ones who try to chase anyone who wants to talk about their headcanon or their own characters off the public sites like Tumblr. They are the bitter shriveled old farts who can't stand anyone having any fun in an arena they want to control.
So what if a lot of these "Original characters" in fanfic or in the game are bad? If someone is having fun with them, why do these Lordinators care? No one is requiring them to read posts or read stories or someone's headcanon. I didn't mean to annoy you with that! Just know it isn't a term I like either: I just didn't know what else to call it succinctly. I have sometimes felt some awkwardness with Nyx, seeing as she has some of my own traits and background. I get what you're saying, though. I only used the old foegey reference ironically, because if you know me by now--I hope you do!--I am not saying that I am old fogey. Just making a point about how I know my preference for old school style games looks to the younger gamers and that I don't care one bit. They care because they're the Stop Having Fun Guys. They can go do that somewhere else and leave us alone. If I pushed any buttons, that wasn't my intention at all! Now I want to mess with them on Facebook and make a community called 'lore Schmore' and state upfront "The lore is great, but Loredinators are not welcome. If you love it so much, then why don't you marry it?"

No no! You weren't annoying at all! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)
It's the irony that I've heard these lordinators say that Morrowind fans are shriveled and bitter, blah blah, when they are the ones who are so uptight. ![>:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/superangry.png)
Yeah, "old school" in this is much better, because it focuses on what this is all about. Fun and entertainment.

Oh good. Glad to hear it! I mean, I have my limits. I don't get why a lot of Japanese modders what to insert so much modern stuff in, but I appreciate the hard work and talent it takes, and some of it is very cool. I don't need to play an anime character, but hey, I won't gripe either. I get creeped out by some mods, admittedly, especially the sort that all by display flashing neon signs the size of the Ghostfence that say 'I HAVE MAJOR ISSUES WITH WOMEN AND THIS IS ALL THAT KEEPS ME FROM PULLING AN ELLIOT ROGERS'. But I still just shrug and move on. It's Nexus's or Lovers Labs responsibility to police not mine. But hey, I'm the one who got sick of the bard songs and replaced it with the Trololol Song and stuff like that. You can only hear Ragnar the Red so many times! I also replaced the combat music with Eye of the Tiger ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Ot's fun. But really, if people want to replace dragons with Fluttershy the pony or Macho Man Randy Savage or Thomas the Tank engine, it doesn't affect my game. I know some people arue 'Well, they're wasting their talent on stupid crap' but they conveniently leave out 'and they aren't modding stuff I like.' I do wish they would mod more clothes and armor and fewer ENBs, but that's just me ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Yeah, I don't care about most of those mods. And there needs to be more basic good stuff like clothes and hairs, and better faces for anyone, and just good mods like we had in Morrowind.
It's more the hate against players wanting to focus on their own character and how they play them and how they perceive the game world that I was talking about. Different headcannons, a more mentally cooperative participation with the game itself, as opposed to a rigid purist approach these lorists take.
If it were meant to be so rigid, then TES would have been written as a series of novels, not an interactive game. That they go with certain storyline is because they have to have some sort of consistency to carry on the game storyline. It's not a rigid code to adhere by.
But sometimes when I hear Ragnar the Red for the umpteenth time, I feel like killing the bard ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Yeah, I see what you mean. I've said so myself. It would be a book, movie, or static work of art.
Is no one training people to be free thinkers anymore?

LOL, just took a look at F/S and some idiot posted that they ruled a fandom with an iron fist until they tired of it.
It's this mentality that's ruining the real fun in getting together with others to enjoy stuff. The need to control it and to shut down the differing opinion of others.

You are not alone in feeling that way by any means. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Have you noticed how many times in my journal and on here I've made the statement "but Aeronwen is not a self-insert"? The fact is, my brain child and I do have a lot in common and I use real life experiences with horses, camping, wildlife, tracking, etc. to flesh her out. Because Aeronwen has often been a target of the "Kill All Mary-Sues Crusaders", I've ended up feeling like I always have to tack that "she's not a self-insert" line anytime I mention something that Aeronwen and I have in common.

What is wrong with a self insert anyways?
"Oh, there's so many bad fics out there..."
Gosh, maybe that's because you have people from all ages and all walks of life posting their fics and odds are a lot of them aren't going to be to your liking. Deal with it. It's the internet, but don't bash, people. I wouldn't read 99% of the fics, too. But I don't whine about it.
How many times have pro-ficcers say that their characters are themselves in certain ways? A lot of them.

Glad I'm not alone! And yeah, I have noticed. I've said it once or twice of Nyx and myself. I took the name from her for forums, etc. because it was easy to remember, but do people get that? Lol nope. She has way many more trust issues than I do. If Zade and Silvercat showed up at MY house wanting some action, I'd be all "Come on in, place is a mess, though!" ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Daedric Cat, which one is F/S? I'm having a derp. I think the hair dye I just used killed some brain cells. Your point is still valid, though. Why do people have to tell others what to do? Tribalism? Does it make them feel safe? 10 years ago, I stopped a NaNoWriMo project I was on, because a friend (well-intentioned, but good intentions will take you straight to Molag Bal's house) told me my character was --too self insert. Caitlin had many of my traits, but she wasn't, and if she was, who gives two damns? Not I. I still have it on LJ. I might revive it.

How many times have pro-ficcers say that their characters are themselves in certain ways? A lot of them. The only bad fics out there are the ones with spelling-grammar errors so egregious that you can't read them. Even disturbing subject matter can make for a good story as long as it's well-handled. Otherwise, I tend to divide things into "I likes this" or "I didn't like this". I got my start writing KiSS fanfic with me as an added character when I was twelve. that was right around the time they invented the wheel ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Okay, 1977, but some of those stories, I grin and shake my head now. But were they bad, as in badfics? Nope!

Branding original characters as Mary Sues seems to be the "in" thing just like bashing Azura. A while back there was a community on Live Journal called Mary Sue Hunters, or something like that. They would look for fanfics that they considered bad and then make a post about these stories to alert their community. The members would then go and badger the writer, leaving all sorts of nasty comments. Then they would celebrate when the writer reached the point that he or she took their fic down.
They would then make posts that were basically patting each other on the back and saying, "Another Sue down."
It was disgusting.

That's awful. Really awful.
There's the infamous sporking communities, too. They'd take sections of a bad fic and snark it in different colors for amusement. I found it not only cruel, but awfully boring.
So what if someone writes a badfic? To be honest, I roll my eyes at most fics, but I leave them alone. If they are having fun, more power to them.
F/S = Fandom Secrets.

Oh, EW.
I did read that community a long while back, but I stopped when I realized how really mean-spirited they were.

F/S = Fandom Secrets. Ah, thanks! I do admit to enjoying MST3k treatments, but when they're done right, they usually aren't mean. I did one ten years ago that might be considered mean, and I feel badly about that. But really, a clever MSTing plays off things, riffs them, not sporks them.

Ugh, I know. I troll them once in a while. funny as hell.
You know, I've noticed that about Nyx, that she has those.... "ba-dum" ~*~self-insert~*~ qualities- which makes her a well rounded and believable character. I've read a writing guide by a well known sci-fi writer and he says that you want to put yourself some into your characters to make them more real, more interesting.
When did this become such a horrible thing?
